A true American creation, Symphony was developed at the University of California at Davis in 1948. A curious viticultural researcher or grapevine scientist, Dr. Olmo, was playing mix-and-match in the vineyards, crossing various grape varieties. The cross between the flamboyant fragrant Muscat d'Alexandrie and the rather drab Grenache Gris showed some promise. After years of making wines and testing them they finally decided it was good enough and gave the grape the highly marketable name Symphony.
